Professions
The most common and reliable way to earn coin in Siliren is by having a job, or a Profession. There are a number of different Professions and each has its own skill requirements and wages. Having a Profession allows your PC to earn money each season in order to pay Rent and purchase items. All Professions are listed on the Price List.
How do I apply for a job?
Applying for a job is simple. Once your Character Sheet is created (but before it is approved) you should think about what job your PC might work. Find this job, or the title most relevant to it, on the Price List and make sure you have the correct skills, and enough of them, to apply for the job. Skill requirements are explained more below. Then head over to the Job Application Request thread and fill out the form. A Spirit Moderator will look over your application and approve it, sending you a PM to notify you. Once approved you must add you job title, level and wage to your CS. If the job application is denied, the Spirit Moderator will PM you and explain why.
How do I earn my wages?
All your Character has to do to earn wages is apply for the Profession they want in the Job Application Request thread. Once the job is approved the Character needs to participate in at least one IC thread per season. Finally, at the end of each season, the Character needs to request their wages in the Wage Request thread, where a Spirit Moderator will then check the Character’s job status, their activity level and then award the wages to the Character via a PM. Your Character does not need to participate in a thread that describes them actually working their job, but you can!
Job Titles
There are many different jobs, all listed on the Price List by their Job Title. A Job Title, such as Medical simply shows what area of expertise your PC is working in. Having a Medical job says that your PC does something in the medical field. It does not specifiy your specific job, such as nurse, medical herbalist, surgeon, doctor, etc. nor does it specifiy where you are working, such as at your own medical practice if you can afford one, or working under a doctor at the Lysium Medical Center. Job Titles are an OOC factor that allows Moderators to know how much your PC should be paid in wages and what skills your PC needs to do the job.
Job Level
A Job Level is the promotional level at which the PC resides. The currently existing Job Levels are; Unskilled, Initiate, Dedicated, Artisan, and Professional. Each Job Level requires a certain amount of skill points, listed in the table below. Most starting Characters will start out in the Unskilled or Initiate Job levels, although some can start at the Dedicated level.
Level | Total Skill Points |
---|---|
Unskilled | 0-40 |
Initiate | 41-80 |
Dedicated | 81-120 |
Artisan | 121-160 |
Professional | 161-250 |
Prestigious | 251-399 |
Maestro | 400 or More |
Some jobs are advanced enough and complicated enough that they cannot be worked by a PC with Unskilled or Initiate level skill points. For example, a Mercenary is a complicated job that requires great skill and cannot be done by an Initiate worker, therefore a PC must have at least 81 relevant skills points to even get the first promotional level of the Profession.
The Job Level is determined by skill points. All jobs have different skills that are required in order to be successful at the job. For example, a Medical job cannot be done without skills such as Anatomy or Medicine. Other skills might support this job such as Observation or Herbalism. All these are called relevant skills. A PC must add the skill points for all their relevant skills to get the total which is then applied to the Job Level.
In the Job Application Request thread the Character will list all the skills they think are relevant to the job they are applying for, along with how many skill points in each they have. A Spirit Moderator will determine if these skills are indeed relevant to the job you are applying for.
What make a skill relevant to a job?
In order for a skill to be determined relevant to a job, the skill must be used during the job most of the time. So Medicine for a Medical job is obviously very relevant as the skill is being used the entire time. However, for a job like Chef, Endurance would not be considered a relevant skill. While having skill points in Endurance would certainly help your PC not tire while working, is it not significant enough to make a positive impact in your Profession. If a PC did not have this skill their job as a Chef would not be worse than one who did have this skill – and so it is not considered ‘relevant. Each job has a list of skills that are considered ‘relevant’ below.
Can Spells be considered a relevant skill?
This depends on the job and on the Spell. If a PC takes a Caster, Enchanter, or Runic Writer job then Spells would be considered relevant skills. Of course, the type of Spell being considered would have to make sense to the job. So while some jobs listed below may have ‘Spell’ listed as a relevant skill, any Spell won’t work – but rather one that makes IC sense.

Freelance Jobs
It is possible to earn coin within a thread for doing a task or action that would either result in a payment or in the looting of coin. A thread where a PC is awarded coin by a Moderator is considered to be a Freelance Job thread. Characters can have Freelance jobs even if they have a Profession, and Characters can choose, as well, to not have a Profession and simply live off Freelance Jobs.
Characters who have a Profession cannot make coin off Freelance Jobs where the job being done relates to the Profession the Character already has or the main skills the Profession requires. For example, a Herbalist cannot earn extra coin from a Freelance Job thread where they pick herbs and sell them to a shop, or treat a wound of a patient with herbs, as these actions require the Herbalism skill and therefore relate to the chosen Profession. While a Character can certainly write threads like these and mention payment in them, the Moderator will not award extra coin in the Grade and the Player should consider the mentioned coin to be part of their wages. Characters can make coin off Freelance Job threads where the PC does a task or action that is not related to their Profession.
If a Character wishes to not have a chosen Profession and survive exclusively off Freelance Job threads, they are allowed to do so. They must still apply for this via the Job Application Request thread and simply put Freelance as their job status in the form. The Player, however, should be very aware that – especially for new and low-skilled Characters – surviving off Freelance Jobs is extremely difficult. The idea of surviving off these jobs is mainly for highly skilled crafters or merchants who make and sell their own wares to PCs and NPCs in thread. In this way, depending on their posting activity, they might be able to make more money off this than off a Profession. Early and low-skilled Characters would have to write a significant amount of Freelance Job threads in order to survive a season’s Rent expenses.
Do I have to apply for a Freelance Job everytime I want to write a Freelance thread?
No. The only time one has to apply in the Job Application Request thread for a Freelance job is if the Character is choosing to survive off Freelance Jobs rather than a Profession. This is simply to notify Moderators that the Character is forgoing a Profession. Other than that, any Character can start, write and finish a Freelance Job thread any time they want and will gain their coin when the thread is Graded by a Moderator.
Job Thread Requirements
PCs that have a profession that earns wages at an Unskilled, Initiate, or Dedicated level do not have to write Job Threads. This changes once a PC is earning wages at an Artisan level or higher. They have either become a prominent figure in their field or are invested enough in their career that it affects them as a character. Artisan, Professional, Prestigious, and Maestro level PCs do not have to write Job Threads if they do not wish to. However, if they do not, then they will only earn half of their possible wages for that season. This allows experienced PCs to effectively have a passive income or an active income, at the choice of the writer. Below are the Job Thread requirements based on the level of earnings.
- Artisan: 1 Job Thread with a final word count of at least 1,500.
- Professional: 1 Job Thread with a final word count of at least 3,000.
- Prestigious: 2 Job Threads, each with a final word count of at least 2,000.
- Maestro: 2 Job Threads, each with a final word count of at least 2,500.
Important Note for Prestigious and Maestro Job Threads
The two job threads have to be different stories in order for both of them to count for full wages. If the second job thread is a continuation of a situation that arose in the first thread, it will only count as one job thread written for the season. If only one job thread is written, when two are required for full wages, the PC will receive 66% of their possible seasonal wages instead.
