Stormborn

Stormborn is a surname given to children who fall under a specific circumstance. Stormborn children are young children, from infancy to early childhood, who are found on the high seas, with no persons to claim them. Oftentimes they are survivors of shipwrecks or sea battles. If they survive, and no reunited with their loved ones, they are given the Stormborn name.

Stormborns live varied lives, depending on who finds and saves their life. Those who are found by merchant ships are often dropped at the next port to live in an orphanage, unless some shipmate decides to take the child upon themselves. Some Captains may choose to keep the child as an apprentice on the vessel, and the ship becomes their home.

The more unlucky ones who find themselves on pirate or smuggling ships more often than not become Stormborn slaves. Either they are kept on the ship to provide labor, or apprentice under a ship mage or cook, they are less than likely to be provided with the love and care a child craves. Those who are unwanted are taken and sold to the highest bidder.

Whatever their story, Stormborns are always left without a true family. They often turn to others like themselves for comfort and understanding. Stormborns like these have developed their own secret language – msot popular amoungst Stormborn slaves – called See-Speak – to further their bond to each other, as well as speak plainly to each other around their masters.
