The Xekresian Skerrick

Published by Abraxas on

In Anorian mythology, there are several instances of items that were made from an extraordinarily rare material called xekrese. In many of the fables, the appearance of such an item would bestow either tremendous fortune in the form of wealth or boons, or it would be a harbinger to a person’s downfall. Over time, the Anorians believed that xekrese possessed the ability to change a person’s fate.

The Xekresian Skerrick is a fabulous casino in Avakaron that plays on this old fable. It is the premier location for those seeking to tempt fate or observe others doing so. It lies adjacent to both the Physical and Energy temples and south of the Ministry of Casters’ campus.

It is the epitome of opulence within Avakaron as everything from the chairs to the tables, to the carpets, even the door handles are all the products of master craftsmen. Everything is kept clean and well maintained so that every guest can receive the greatest possible experience. All employees are dressed in silk uniforms provided by the business. The game runners, who are always rather physically attractive, wear a blue and gold vest over an otherwise bare torso, with either a matching silk set of pants or silk skirt. All the waitstaff wear the same vest and pant/skirt combo except in silver and beige.

Security enforcers wear black and silver silks with a silk coat in addition. Every security enforcer is a practitioner of Auristics and keep a constant watch for any attempts to cheat by use of magic. Especially for telekinesis and deceptics. The musicians and singers that provide a soothing ambient melody don silks of silver with ruby accents. They perform from the second floor balconies surrounding the main gambling den. And the courtesans, regardless of their gender, are free to select their colors so long as they manage to entice the guests to continue gambling.

The central hall occupies most of the building, with multiple tables dedicated to each type of game. Lighting is provided by enchanted glass orbs that float overhead and move in unison to generate various patterns and designs for two hours before repeating the loop. The highest quality of snacks and alcoholic beverages are served by the tavern situated in the northwest corner of the central hall. Several rooms are connected to the main gambling den. Each of them is a small lounge for those wishing for a private audience with any of the courtesans. On the second floor are several rooms for private games for those that place a reservation. As well as rooms for employees, offices, and the vault.

The vault is a large room with numerous chests and shelves for the many forms of currency that have been lost to the establishment. Sheets of solid cast iron are sandwiched between two layers of finely crafted wood for all four walls, the ceiling, and the floor. While the single door leading to the vault requires a key it is not the primary defense. Just inside the door is a Ward that was commissioned from a master Warder. It only permits the owner of the Xekresian Skerrick and the chief of security to pass through. A tangible distortion is visible in the doorway that burns the skin and clothing of any trespasser.

There are only three rules to obey; no cheating, no fighting, and always maintain an indoor speaking voice. There is zero tolerance for the first and second rule, the third receives only one warning. Those forced to leave forfeit all winnings.
