Hellbend Curses and Slang and Phrases

Post by Geronimo »

I thought it would be fun to get started a potential list of Siliren based curse words, derogatory words, slag, etc. Here are just a few ideas, though I would love to fill the list with lots of potential words. I also am basing this on Hellbend specifically because curse words for humans I would assume would be the same for the most part, at least the non-earthly dependent curses like "shit" and "fuck". I can make a separate Lore request for Human curses as well if there is enough request.

I've set up some of the words, if not most of them, to be able to directly replace curses in text, but I understand that that may not be sufficient for more complex curses such as "Damn you to hell" ("Tercer you to the abyss" just doesn't have the same ring to it, if you get what I'm saying). And the words themselves can also be changed if people feel like it isn't cursey enough too. I'm just throwing pasta at the wall and see what sticks, so any and all help is appreciated!

Curses:
  • Skepre- Direct translation to Common: Bugger off
  • Chak/ing-Direct translation to Common: Fuck/Fuck you
  • Avent- Direct translation to Common: Shit
  • Tercer- Direct translation to Common: Damn/Dammit
  • Giss- Direct translation to Common: Ass/asshole
  • Dravent- a stupid person; moron. Direct translation to Common: dipshit [Credit to DemonAnastasi]
Derogatory Names:
  • Galster- Someone who defames or slanders the family name
  • Fifter- An egregious coward. Direct translation to Common: someone who poops the bed
  • Balko- A man who beats his wife or children. A wife-beater. Coined from an old, fictional folk tale about a Hellbend named Balko and his family, telling young women to heed caution when marrying a man just for his wealth, lest they fall prey to abuse.
  • Bolka- A less common but equally derogatory term for a woman who beats her husband or her children. A man-beater. Coined from the same story above but the name is altered to refer to the role reversal of the wife and the husband.
  • Spad- An outlandish fool, someone who makes a mockery of themselves. Direct translation to Common: Someone who runs naked in the streets.
  • Gundrow- Someone who is being excessively inappropriate or rude. Direct translation to Common: A dick or cunt
  • Dohi- Someone who is extremely annoying, persistent, and loud, like a bug. Direct translation to Common: hissing cicada
  • Aper- Someone who smells extreme bad or does not care about their personal hygiene, especially in regards to a salty or fishy smell. Direct translation to Common: someone who has lain with fishes
  • Siph- Someone who uses magic to cast ill will onto others or for other nefarious purposes, especially if Siphonics is involved.
  • Lapin- A derogatory word for someone who chooses to be a visual companion for someone else in exchange for money, in particular when they are meant to intimidate or bring visual/sexual appeal to their companion. Direct translation to Common: A muscle or escort
  • Sword- A male prostitute. While derogatory historically, the Swords and Sandals have reclaimed the term in some way by affirming that no one should be denied love, regardless of gender or circumstance.
Slang:
  • Catch a swordfish- Having sex with a man. Primarily used to refer to gay men, especially those who frequent the Swords and Sandals.
  • You a Bastard Sword?- Do you have a big penis?
  • Slap- Both a noun and a verb meaning good fun. When you are "having a slap" you are having a good time, usually with many laughs and great fun. When someone "is a slap" that means that they are someone who knows how to have a good time and is good fun to be around. Primarily used by those raise or born within Avakaron, this term is thought to have developed due to the common response of slapping someone's arm, shoulder, or leg when they tell a good joke. In reality, this is likely not the true origins of the phrase, as the history of the phrase itself has long since been lost in time.
Phrases:
  • Muostas's Depths! -- an exclamation/interjection denoting surprise/exasperation. Equivalent of irl God's Wounds/Zounds and God's Body/Odbodkins (which are both archaic). Also equivalent to Davy Jones' Locker, or Hell. Sailors and other seafarers would be most likely to use this phrase.[Credit to DemonAnastasi]
  • Cheon's Domain -- equivalent of irl usage of Hell. "What in Cheon's Domain"/"What the hell." Would have more connotations of death and time rather than eternal torture, obviously. Would be considered blasphemous by more devout Hellbends, but other Hellbends such as sailors wouldn't care. [Credit to DemonAnastasi]
  • Cheon tercer you! -- the equivalent of irl God damn you. A euphemism would be Cheon take you, being less harsh, but still with death implications, and considered blasphemy by the more devout either way. [Credit to DemonAnastasi]
  • By (Deity's name)! -- equivalent of Elder Scrolls' usage of By the Gods/By the Nine Divines/By the Eight/By Shor/etc. Easily usable by characters of any background. (Note: "by" can be added to both Muostas's Depths and Cheon's Domain for an exasperated effect -- also I haven't used this phrase in Currituck's interactions yet.) [Credit to DemonAnastasi]
Other:
  • Mune- A woman of great merit and inner strength. A woman who is highly saught after or has many suiters. Direct Translation to Common: Damsel or maiden
  • Whalerman- A man who seeks adventure and/or is known for great adventures. A term coined by early Hellbend sailors to describe those who caught a whale for food during a great famine to bring back to the city of Avakaron.
  • Wailerman- The opposite of a Whalerman— a man who actively avoids adventures or strife, often described as wailing and moaning at any sign of change. Not necessarily used to describe someone who fears adventure rather describe someone who enjoys the simplicities of life and doesn't need thrills to bring them joy. However, the term is commonly misused as a term for a lazy or boring person.
Songs:

I'm a little dohi, short and stout
Here are my wingtips and here is my snout
When you're in the forest and you hear me shout
Better save your ears and get the chak out!

I love these! My only suggestion atm is switching the Balko/Bolka since terms - traditionally in most languages i think - that end in A tend to be about women and end in O/E tend to be about men.

I was reading it the other way around when I came up with that loool. I was thinking Balk was more feminine than Bolk, but it does change quite a bit when you add an a or an o to the end of it so yeah, I see what you mean. XD Changes made.

This probably isn't related to curses and whatnot - but I was thinking that phrases would be a good thing to add to the lore, eventually, as well. Obviously, in English, we have a lot of phrases that we use on a daily basis for this reason or another.

One way to kind of help think of good topics/themes for curse/slang/phrases is to think about what is common in the culture. For Avakaronian Hellbends obviously, some important topics would be:
- Family
- Ocean/fish
- Rigen/Magic/Spells
- Gods

As well as thinking about what they look down upon
- humans (?)
- Siphonics

Hopping in to note the ones I've already come up with and used for Currituck! We have:
  • Muostas's Depths! -- an exclamation/interjection denoting surprise/exasperation. Equivalent of irl God's Wounds/Zounds and God's Body/Odbodkins (which are both archaic). Also equivalent to Davy Jones' Locker, or Hell. Sailors and other seafarers would be most likely to use this phrase.

  • By (Deity's name)! -- equivalent of Elder Scrolls' usage of By the Gods/By the Nine Divines/By the Eight/By Shor/etc. Easily usable by characters of any background. (Note: "by" can be added to both Muostas's Depths and Cheon's Domain for an exasperated effect -- also I haven't used this phrase in Currituck's interactions yet.)
(Btw I'm gonna edit what I've already written for my solo thread to include these cute curses you've created!)

Another idea has come to me! This time, a profane folk song used to mock loudmouthed and annoying people:

I'm a little dohi, short and stout
Here are my wingtips and here is my snout
When you're in the forest and you hear me shout
Better save your ears and get the chak out!

It would be sung by schoolchildren to bully classmates.

There would be a little dance to go with it, too, pointing to the proverbial wingtips and the nose. Will probably come up with a full dance for the full song.

Not to rain on anyone parade so I apologize in advance

I'd be careful with these. At the moment this isn't a theme I will accept officially into the Lore. I cannot stop you from using it in thread, obviously, but I have yet to develop the God's domain/living space and am specifically staying away from any kind of heaven/hell scenario. Even the word Hell in Hellbends (who were given their name by Humans) does not refer to the Place of Hell, but rather the idea of Hell as a word meaning chaotic.

Currently, in any religion, Anorian or Old God, there does not exist a Hell/Heaven equivelant.
