Siphonics

Some Casters wish to transcend their own magical limits and do so by utilizing other creature’s to power their spells. Siphonics is a spell favored by battle-casters and even mage-hunters. Due to their ability to manipulate a person’s magical usage a Siphonist often is treated with respect, and caution.

When a Caster initiates a Personal Rigen spell, they utilize their own Spellpool. This is done because they are attuned to their own supply of Rigen. Personal Rigen spells can be powered by other sources, but the Caster’s personal Spellpool is the most efficient way. Most Harnessed Rigen spells are based on unbonded rigen from the Atmopool. The primary function of Siphonics is to draw bonded rigen from other living creatures. A Caster extrudes their own Rigen from their Spellpool and reconfigures its properties to mimc an absence of Rigen. Unbonded rigen naturally seeks to fill in these absences before stabilizing into bonded rigen particles. However, the Caster seeks to configure their Personal Rigen to repel the unbonded rigen and attract the bonded rigen of other Spellpools.

Once the Caster’s Personal Rigen has successfully attracted the Rigen from another living creature, the two particles attach briefly to each other, allowing the Caster to exert their will over the stolen Rigen. Channeling the Personal Rigen of another living creature is not a safe activity. When Rigen bonds to a living creature it becomes attuned to them which makes it possible for the creature to manipulate it through their will. Another creature’s Rigen would rather become an unbonded particle rather than bond to the Caster. At the higher levels, the Caster is able to alter the stolen Rigen enough that it becomes able to bond to them.

High level Casters that are able to absorb large amounts of Rigen are capable of surgence. This is when the amount of Rigen absorbed would cause them to exceed their Spellpool’s maximum amount. While they are only able to hold onto this extra Rigen temporarily, the act of holding it exposes them to multiple hazards. See Risks below for the hazards of surgence.

Prerequisites

Casters must have a good understanding of how Rigen is bound to living things before they can take any skill points in Siphonics. The Caster must have a minimum of 20 skill points in Rigenology in order to learn Siphonics.

Initial Learning

An instructor is required in order to learn how to extract Rigen from another living entity in a way that it can be used. The instructor must be at least an Expert in the spell.

Skill Levels

Apprentice

With an instructor’s assistance, the Caster is discovering how to use their own Spellpool to create the illusion of an absence of Rigen. In the early stages it would be more likely that the Caster attracts more unbonded rigen than the Personal Rigen of other living things. Even an experienced Apprentice will mainly be absorbing all unbonded and bonded Rigen in a general area rather than from a specific target. If the Apprentice is in physical contact with their desired target they are able to harness 10 points from their target’s Spellpool, and 10 points from the Atmopool. These points must be immediately converted into a spell otherwise they are absorbed into the Caster involuntarily and becomes unusable.

Journeyman

The Caster begins to demonstrate better control of their reconfiguration process. The mimicked absence they generate is now able to completely filter out unbonded rigen and only attach to the Rigen of another creature’s Spellpool. The Caster is capable of absorbing up to 30 points from another creature’s Spellpool from no greater than ten feet away. A spell must be formed immediately otherwise the stolen Rigen is absorbed into the Caster involuntarily and becomes unusable.

Expert

At this stage the Caster has learned how to attune Rigen taken from another living creature’s Spellpool so that it bonds to them temporarily. Alternatively, they can choose to allow the stolen Rigen to dissipate back into the Atmopool. The Caster is able to harness up to 40 points from another living creature’s Spellpool so long as they are within thirty feet. An expert is also capable of selecting two targets simultaneously, but must pay the spell cost to affect each target. The stolen Rigen does not need to be converted into a spell immediately, but if not used within an hour it leaves the Caster to become part of the Atmopool.

Master

From their experience the Caster begins to understand the intricacies of absorbing Rigen into their body. 50 points can be absorbed from any living creature’s Spellpool within fifty feet. The Caster is able to select up to four targets simultaneously so long as they pay the spell cost for each target. Alternatively, the Caster is capable of safely transferring up to 50 points from their own Spellpool to another living creature. The selected creature retains the spell-points for one day. A master is able to attune to the stolen Rigen in a way that allows them to hold onto it for up to five hours before it becomes part of the Atmopool.

100 Points

A Caster with 100 skill points in Siphonics has learned how to absorb rigen from the Atmopool in a way that forces it to bond quicker. They accelerate the rate at which unbonded rigen bonds to them to refresh their Spellpool. Doing so allows them to have a fully refreshed Spellpool each day rather than taking several days to occur. Each use absorbs 50 points from the Atmopool. Now the Caster is able to transfer up to 80 of their own Spellpool to another living creature. The Caster is also able to select up to five living creatures as targets, so long as they pay the spell cost for each creature. Up to 60 spell-points can be absorbed from each living creature. The Caster is able to retain the points for up to twelve hours before they dissipate back into the Atmopool.

Cost

Siphonics has a spell cost of 20 points regardless of the Caster’s level. At no time does the cost get reduced. The table below is a quick reference for how much a Siphonist is capable of absorbing based on their skill level.

Siphonics LevelPersonal Rigen Absorption
(Per Target)
Atmopool Absorption
Apprentice1010
Journeyman300
Expert400
Master500
1006050

Risks

The acceleration of Rigen absorption has varying levels of risk which depend on the amount being absorbed. Unstable or unattuned Rigen inside the body causes nausea, internal hemorrhaging, and legions to appear on the skin. A Caster that consistently uses Siphonics will constantly feel unwell and fatigued from their body’s effort to continuously adjust to the new Rigen. When surgence occurs the Caster feels a sense of euphoria and becomes rather energetic. They will be unaware of the internal injuries they are suffering which range from internal bleeding, to numerous exploding blood vessels, and even organ failure.
