Rigen Wyrms

Published by admin on

Magical creatures in Siliren generally fall in groups of similar abilities or traits. One of the first of these grouping to be found by Humans was the Rigen Wyrms. The first discovered are now commonly called Bluebellied King Leeches, found in the wilderness near Lysium. Later on, when Humans came in contact with the Hellbends, they discovered the Red Root Wyrms. More species have been discovered since then, and almost surely there are others deeper in the world. While there are many types of Rigen Wyrms, most believe to have mutated from snakes, leeches, and earthworms, they do have some similarities that tie them together.

Wyrms have no legs, arms, or wings. While they can vary from scaled like snakes to leathery skin, all Wyrms travel on their stomachs if on land. All Rigen Wyrms feed off the Rigen of living things in one way or another. While not all Rigen Wyrms are magical per se, they all live off the Rigen they eat, whether that be by eating Rigen-rich plants or sucking the Rigen straight from a creature’s body. Rigen Wyrms all are sensitive to Rigen in a way that isn’t quite understood yet. Casting spells and large concentrations of Rigen draw all types of Wyrms, be it at varying degrees depending on the type and conditions, etc.

Some things Wyrms don’t necessarily have in common include their environment, reproduction, and origin. They also vary greatly in size and aggression. Different types of Rigen Wyrms can be found in salt or fresh water, on land, and underground. Some prefer swamps, while others live exclusively in the desert. Wyrms reproduction can be asexual, sexual, or hermaphroditism. This mainly has to do with their origin.

Wyrms are generally divided into the categories; Lesser or Great, mainly due to size. Most adult Wyrms that are under 6’ are considered Lesser Wyrms, with those greater then 6’ at adulthood being considered Great Wyrms. Some argue that aggression should be considered, and that the King Leech is a Great Wyrm as well, even though it’s max length is about 2.5’.

Below is more specific information about the known types of Rigen Wyrms, although even these still have much that is unknown.

Bluebellied King Leech

Name: Bluebellied King Leech. Also known as Blue Blood Wyrms or, most commonly, King leeches.
Common/Unique: Unique
Rarity: Rare. Bluebellies live alone except during spring when they breed.

This is not an actual image of a King Leech, it is just an inspiration picture.

Abilities

Bluebellies most resemble leeches, with a siphonics-like ability to draw rigen from their victims. The victim’s rigen seems to concentrate in their blood, which the Bluebellies then drink. They heal from injury very fast after feeding, but the reason has not been discovered.

Appearance

Bluebellies range in size from about 1” when young, to about 2.5’ when fully grown. Although they seem to keep growing all their life, none larger than 2.75’ have been recorded. Bluebellies’ heads look like that of a large leech. Their bodies are more like that of a snake’s, with scales on their backs and a soft underbelly. They have a dark brownish-black coloring, with the underbelly having a blue tint which gives them their name.

Reproduction/Lifespan

Bluebellies are hermaphrodites, meaning each one has both male and female reproductive organs. However, they do reproduce sexually. They lay between 15 and 18 eggs. The first to hatch often eat the others, eggs or hatched, making the typical litter size around 2-5. The average lifespan is 15-18 years. They are most active in the spring, as that is their mating season. Eggs hatch by early summer.

Diet

Rigen-infused blood, mainly from small to midsized creatures.

Habitat

They prefer moist leaf-covered soil, most often found near wooded ponds and rivers. Being able to swim or travel on land, Bluebellies ambush victims coming to the water to drink. They often make burrows at the base of trees to sleep in when full.

Taming

No signs of affection or attachment are shown. Can not be trained

Population size

Population unknown. Due to their solidarity and aggressive nature towards each other outside of the mating season, the King Leech remains a thankfully rare sight.

Other Info

A full-grown King Leech can draw as much as 150 rigen from their victim in a single feeding, after which they will release their victim and return to their burrow, where they will sleep for up to 20 days. If it is attempted to remove them before they have fed, the Bluebelly will wrap around the limb of their victim, making them very hard to remove. This wrapping around the limb will often cut off blood supply below the bite, often resulting in the loss of limb.
*Some humans believe that Bluebellies may be the key to health potions, while most hellbends believe any attempt to uses them as such would defy the god’s will.

Red Root Wyrm

Name: Red Root Wyrms. Also known as Uathirtch worms, Skerrick bait, and Glowroots.
Common/Unique: Unique
Rarity: Rare. While very common in the Uathirtch groves near Avakaron, due to their diet they are only found there.

This is not an actual image of a Red Root Wyrm, it is just an inspiration picture.

Abilities

Red root wyrms have a slight glow in the dark, as well as a very very high Rigen concentration. If cut both sides will grow a new head or tail as needed.

Appearance

Reds can grow several feet long, but are never more then a half inch around. They are a very vibrant red in color, and have a slight glow.

Reproduction/Lifespan

Red Root Wyrms do not reproduce, nor do they seem to die from natural causes. They can starve and drown. When cut both halves regrow and live. Some who raise them have reported longer Reds cutting themselves in half on rocks, but this has not been confirmed.

Diet

Red Root Wyrms only eat the fine, Rigen rich roots of the Uathirtch tree and it’s fallen leaves. Due to the rich waste they leave behind which fertilizes the tree, this is a mutually beneficial and symbiotic relationship. Growing a Uathirtch tree without Red Root Wyrms is hard, but the exact connection between the two is still being explored.

Habitat

They are only found in the earth under Uathirtch trees. Red Roots come to the surface in the fall to eat the leaves, but are otherwise unseen.

Taming

Not possible

Population

There is estimated to be about 1,200 in the wild. They are raised by some fishermen as a premium bait.

Other Info

Their high amount of Rigen makes many alchemists interested in them. They are often used in fishing and pose no threat to other creatures. Away from a food source, a Red Root Wyrm can only live about 5 days. Due to their red color and glow, they make amazing bait for many types of fish. Their unique diet makes them fairly hard to raise though.
