Deceptics
Deceptics
The power to make someone doubt their senses lies with deceptics. Practitioners of this spell seek to create false realities for their subjects. The purpose behind their devotion to the spell can fall anywhere on the spectrum, yet each of them hold a dangerous magic. Magic that can make reality the lie.
The Caster extrudes their Personal Rigen into the atmosphere to create a reaction with the unbonded Rigen of the Atmopool. These reactions are very specific in accordance with the Caster’s desire, but the Caster must dedicate himself to understanding how to accomplish each of these reactions. Through this process, it is possible to generate illusionary sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations. Unbonded Rigen is manipulated into generating these illusions, or false senses.
Visual illusions are generated from Rigen bending light. All wavelengths except for the one that generates the desired color are distorted, leaving a pocket where only that color is visible. Auditory illusions are made from the Rigen vibrating at specific frequencies to generate sounds. Rigen is manipulated into permeating an aroma and directly inhaled to create a false smell. Tastes are formed by attuning Rigen to react to gustatory cells (or taste buds) in a specific way. Tactile senses are made by the Rigen reacting a specified way to direct interaction.
Note on Auditory Illusions: They are not able to extend beyond the specified range of the spell.
Prerequisites
The Caster must have an understanding of Personal Rigen and how to use it in manipulating unbonded rigen. In order to learn Deceptics a Caster must at least be a Journeyman in Rigenology.
Initial Learning
An instructor is required to learn Deceptics. The Caster needs to be taught how to manipulate Rigen into a false sense and have an instructor to guide them. The instructor must be at least an Expert with the spell.
Skill Levels
Apprentice
The Caster is restricted to only being able to generate a single false sense at a time. With the instructor’s help they are studying how to form all five different types of deceptions and can work on them in any order they choose. Each effect is rudimentary. Visuals are flashes of light, audibles are simple noises like pops and bangs, aromas are simply pleasant or unpleasant, tactiles are smooth, rough, hot, or cold, etc. The area of effect is limited to a twenty-five square foot area or 125 cubic foot area (5x5x5). Each of the false senses is short lived and only lasts between five seconds and thirty seconds at most.
Journeyman
Now that the Caster likely has an understanding on how to generate each of the false senses, they begin experimenting with various combinations. The Caster is capable of combining only two false senses into a single casting. Each false sense increases in its complexity. Visuals are able to begin taking shapes though they will lack fine detail. Audio illusions can begin to impersonate animal sounds and brief mortal speech. Tactile sensations can begin to mimic the feel of real objects. Aromas are still a bit vague. But regardless of whether they are generating a single or two false senses, the spell’s duration is now able to last for about three minutes. The area of effect can now encompass up to a 225 square foot area or 3,375 cubic foot area (15x15x15).
Expert
At this stage, the Caster is able to efficiently use up to three false senses in a single casting. They themselves are now able to search for the subtle cues to know for certain if they are experiencing another Caster’s use of Deceptics. Visuals can now create animals or people with reasonable detail. Audio illusions can impersonate complex speech. Tactile senses can begin to impersonate weight. Smells can impersonate specific aromas. Any casting of the spell has a duration of thirty minutes before it naturally dissipates. The area of effect can now encompass up to a 2,025 square foot area or a 91,125 cubic foot area (45x45x45).
Master
The Caster now can generate an illusion that utilizes up to four false senses. Furthermore, their illusions are now able to physically manipulate the surrounding environment. This allows for a person to experience harm rather than the illusion of harm, even though it is an illusion. The duration of the spell, regardless of the number of false senses used, is now a maximum of two hours. The area of effect can now encompass up to a 22,500 square foot area or a 3,375,000 cubic foot area (150x150x150).
100 Points
Casters with 100 skill points in Deceptics are able to make others completely question their reality. The Caster can now incorporate all five false senses into a single casting. The duration of their spells can last up to a full day and encompass a 40,000 square foot area or a 8,000,000 cubic foot area (200x200x200).
Cost
The Caster must provide the initial Rigen to form the spell. Each use of Deceptics requires 10 points of the Caster’s Spellpool. Each use also takes 50 points from the Atmopool. When the Caster is utilizing the spell to a degree lower than what their fully capable (Example: A Journeyman using the spell to the same extent that an Apprentice could perform), the personal cost is halved to 5 points and the Atmopool cost is halved to 25 points. The personal cost is halved only once, but the Atmopool cost continues to be halved each time a new tier of capability is achieved, review the following table for quick reference to Rigen costs.
Caster Ability | Apprentice | Journeyman | Expert | Master | 100 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Spell Level | Personal/Atmo | |||||
Apprentice | 10/50 | 5/25 | 5/13 | 5/7 | 5/4 | |
Journeyman | 10/50 | 5/25 | 5/13 | 5/7 | ||
Expert | 10/50 | 5/25 | 5/13 | |||
Master | 10/50 | 5/25 | ||||

Risks
Deceptics come with a moderate level of risk. Complex illusions require a lot of Rigen from the Atmopool and risks depleting the stable unbonded Rigen necessary. Those caught in the area of the unstable illusion can suffer from burns, second and third-degree, or Rigen poisoning if they stay within the area for too long. At the higher levels when a spell can encompass an entire area, this can endanger every living thing within the spell’s radius.
