First Aid
The First Aid skill is a Knowledge Specialization skill characters can earn XP in. A character’s First Aid skill represents their ability to keep an injured, sick, or otherwise medically compromised individual alive until full medical attention can be provided. Characters with a high First Aid skill typically are emergency responders who can help patients in dire circumstances until they can be tended to by a surgeon or doctor.
First Aid includes a variety of procedures such as: CPR, Heimlich Maneuver, using a tourniquet, stopping bleeding, cleaning wounds to prevent infection, moving patients to safer locations, calming down the patient or passerbys, etc. First Aid does not include complex medical procedures or procedures meant to fully treat a patient’s illness or injury such as providing stitches, setting bones, performing surgery, or giving medicine as that would fall under the Advanced Medicine skill.
Please note that First Aid can be applied before, during, or even after a complex procedure such as providing CPR if the patient flatlines during surgery, etc.
Skill Levels
Apprentice 1-25
Apprentices in First Aid know the very basics of light aid. They can stop minor bleeding, prevent minor risks of infection, and have a bit of a bedside manner. More life saving maneuvers such as a tourniquet or Heimlich Maneuver may be successful in practice, but will likely – if they do not just simply fail – cause some smaller harm to the patient. First Aid at this level should only be used to correct minor wounds, but some may see success with medium wounds.
Journeyman 26-50
Journeymen in First Aid can now perform simple life-saving maneuvers with mostly 100% success. Major bleeding may be able to be lessened, but the patient is still at risk of blood loss. Their bedside manner has improved and they can be known to calm down a panicking patient. Journeyman can reliably aid on-site in medium wounds and can find some success with major wounds.
Expert 51-75
Experts in First Aid know all many life-saving strategies for risky situations. They can reliably stop almost any bleeding if they are quick enough. Experts perform generally well in dangerous or stressful situations and their bedside manner is known to calm hysterical patients. Experts can generally do enough work to prevent all infections given they are attentive enough to the patient. Experts can attend major wounds reliably and may have some success with severe wounds.
Master 76-100
Masters in First Aid work extremely well with their patients and are known to be a calming presence on even the most stressed patient. They work extremely well under pressure and they work quickly. Their knowledge is vast and they almost never make mistakes, especially at high levels. Infection is rare for patients treated by a Master, as bleeding out is nearly impossible with treatment. Masters can reliably aid in severe wounds and can, with some success, save the life of a patient with an extreme wound.
