Masking
Masking
For every Caster that knows the spell, Masking is the last line of defense. Useful for when plans go awry, reflexes prove too slow, or for when an enemy needs to be disheartened. Masking provides protection to the Caster from physical hazards.
Personal Rigen seeps from the Caster’s body to the surface at the start of casting the spell. This process creates a visible glow and audible hum, that can only be heard in silence. At this point, the Caster directs their will to synchronizing the particles of Rigen to the same harmonic frequency. Some casters develop low hums while others a high-pitched but gentle whistle. The pitch of the hum is unique to every Caster and is not something that they have control over until the higher levels. After the spell’s completion, the audible sound persists until either the Caster dispells it or the spell wears out. The visible glow dissipates once the mask is fully established. All masks deteriorate after twenty-four hours.
The Caster’s Personal Rigen is converted into an interwoven harmonic net that has enveloped the Caster. This netting acts as a repulser to high kinetic energy and foreign Rigen. When any part of the net detects high kinetic energy or foreign Rigen it pulls on the rest of the net to a single concentrated point to provide an equal and opposing output. This offers protection from an array of deadly threats, but it is not absolute. Slow-moving objects are not repulsed by the net. Meaning the Caster could be gradually squeezed to death, or a knife can penetrate the skin still if moving very slowly.
Environmental hazards are not completely nullified by the mask either. Extreme heat and cold still affect the Caster. Asphyxiation or poisoning are hazards Masking cannot protect against. The mask is also very delicate and is not able to maintain itself if more of the Caster’s Personal Rigen is used. Any additional Personal Rigen that does not attune itself to the rest of the mask will unravel it completely, meaning no other spells that utilize Personal Rigen can be cast once a mask is established.
Prerequisites
The caster must have an understanding of Personal Rigen and how to manipulate it. In order to learn Masking a Caster must have at least 15 skill points in Rigenology.
Initial Learning
An instructor is required to learn Masking. The Caster needs to be taught how to manipulate Rigen into a harmonized mask and have an instructor to “safely” test the mask. The instructor must be at least an Expert with the spell.
Skill Levels
Apprentice
With the help of an instructor, the Caster learns how to coat themselves with Personal Rigen. This is their experimentation stage with the masking harmonics. Apprentices require several minutes to fully form and attune their mask. The entire body is protected but only able to negate one injury regardless of where it would be. Once one injury has been negated, or if the Caster casts another spell, the masking dissolves.
Journeyman
Now the Caster has learned how to generate a mask quicker, requiring only one minute to fully form and attune their mask. More attacks can now be repulsed before the spell collapses, allowing for two different injuries to be negated with one mask.
Expert
At this stage, the Caster is able to efficiently use his Rigen to oppose possible injury. Masking only takes thirty seconds to perform and multiple smaller masks are created instead of a single one enveloping the entire body. Each limb, the head, the back, and the chest receive their own mask. Each mask is able to negate two injuries before collapsing. The collapse of one mask does not affect the others.
Master
The Caster now can generate a superior mask much faster. It requires five seconds to form and attune the masks for their entire body. All the masks are still only able to negate two injuries each. However, the masks are no longer destabilized by the use of another spell. A master is also able to manipulate the sound their mask generates during its operation, even to a frequency that their race normally cannot hear.
100 Points
Casters with 100 skill points in masking are able to re-purpose their masks. If their Spellpool were low and the Caster desired to use another spell they could break down all their masks to power the other spell. This only can function for a spell with a lower spell base cost than masking’s. For a Caster of this caliber, the masks of each limb, torso, back, and head are valued at 2 spell-points each. In addition, their mask now lasts up to 48 hours before deteriorating.
Costs
All the rigen for masking comes from the caster’s spellpool. The base cost is 32 points for when the caster is masking themselves to the best of their ability. When creating a masking that a less experienced caster could produce, the amount taken from their spellpool is reduced. The following table shows cost regarding a caster’s capability and the level of masking they are performing.
Apprentice | Journeyman | Expert | Master | 100 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Spell Level | |||||
Apprentice | 32 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 2 |
Journeyman | 32 | 16 | 8 | 4 | |
Expert | 32 | 16 | 8 | ||
Master | 32 | 16 |
Risks
Compared to many spells, masking is relatively safe. It does require a lot of Personal Rigen to form a mask, which puts the caster at risk of draining their spellpool too quickly.
