Telepathy
Telepathy
Knowledge is power, and to know what your enemies know can be even more empowering. Telepathy is a dedication to learning what others are unwilling to share with you. While some Casters may not develop an interest for such a spell, few are naive enough to disrespect its potential.
The mind is a labyrinth of electrical discharges, and while it contains infinite complexities it can be deciphered. A Caster focuses their Personal Rigen to establish a connection to another sentient being. In order for the connection to be established, the targeted person’s Rigen must be manipulated to serve as a mediary. When the Personal Rigen of both the Caster and the other sentient being are properly calibrated, the electrical discharges of one mind begin to transmit information through Rigen. The sentient being’s Personal Rigen becomes a transmitter while the Caster’s becomes a receiver. Both are connected by a narrow stream of Rigen that is viewable only with Auristics. To an Aurour the connection, known as a rigenic-coupling (or coupling), is a mixture of both auras.
Since the mind produces millions of discharges in a short period of time, the coupling is only capable of transferring so much information to the Caster. As their skill increases, the Caster is capable of understanding more of the information that they are receiving. Their efficiency with Rigen will also improve, and not just regarding their own Personal Rigen, but will require manipulating less of the targeted sentient being’s Rigen as well. Eventually, the Caster begins to experiment with transmitting their own discharges through the coupling to manipulate the other’s.
When another Caster is the target it can be more difficult to establish a connection. They are able to negate the rigenic-coupling if they disrupt the desired manipulation of their Spellpool. Even if a targeted Caster resists a coupling can still be established.
Prerequisites
Casters must have a good understanding of manipulating Rigen before they can take any skill points in Telepathy. The Caster must be at least a Journeyman in Rigenology in order to learn Telepathy.
Initial Learning
An instructor is required in order to learn how to establish a rigenic-coupling to another mind. The instructor must be at least an Expert in the spell.
Skill Levels
Apprentice
Under the instructor’s guidance the Caster is focusing on the principles of Telepathy. How to create a rigenic-coupling by manipulating another sentient creature’s Personal Rigen. Many of their attempts to establish a coupling fail, and those that do succeed are able to only offer the Caster the surface emotions of the target. The Caster can sense simple emotions like anger, joy, sadness, fear, etc. but not the reasons why the target has those emotions. Apprentices must have physical contact with their target to establish the coupling. Once it has been formed they can maintain it up to a distance of ten feet and can only sustain a coupling for a minute. The target always feels the presence of the Caster in their mind. The Caster is unable to cast any other spells during the connection.
Journeyman
Casters begin to understand how to establish more stable rigenic-couplings. With the extra stability, they are also able to interpret more information from their target. They can sense the target’s surface thoughts as they’re thinking them. A journeyman is able to establish a connection with a target up to one hundred feet away, but they must be within line of sight. A coupling can be sustained for up to thirty minutes. The Caster’s presence in the target’s mind is less noticeable and could be mistaken as a sense of being watched. The Caster is unable to cast any other spells during the connection.
Expert
At this stage the Caster is able to begin experimenting with sending their own signals through the rigenic-coupling. They are able to telepathically speak with their target, even if they do not have a shared language. A Caster can also sense the target’s thoughts and emotions even if the target is attempting to suppress them. The Caster can begin having multiple couplings simultaneously, provided that they pay the spell cost per target. They can establish a coupling with any sentient being in sight and sustain it up to 1,000ft away. A coupling can be sustained for up to two hours. The Caster’s presence is no longer apparent in the target’s mind if the Caster doesn’t wish it. The Caster still cannot cast other spells while maintaining a rigenic-coupling, except for selecting another target for Telepathy.
Master
The rigenic-coupling opens more and allows the Caster to see a target’s memories, as the target remembers it. The Caster is able to send disruptions through the coupling that can erase memories. Up to one hour’s worth of memories can be erased each time a coupling is made. A master can establish a coupling with any sentient being that is within line of sight and sustain that coupling for up to one mile. If the target is a willing sentient being the Caster has established a coupling with multiple times previously, then they don’t need line of sight to establish a coupling. A coupling can be sustained for up to twenty-four hours. The Caster can now cast other spells while maintaining a rigenic-coupling.
100 Points
A Caster with 100 points in Telepathy expands the rigenic-coupling to open new possibilities. The Caster is capable of sending signals to override the targeted sentient being’s own signals. This allows for the caster to implant thoughts, feelings, or even control their body and speech. The Caster is not able to see or hear what the target sees or hears. A rigenic-coupling can now be sustained up to five miles away and last for forty-eight hours.
Cost
Telepathy has a base spell cost of 25 points and requires 15 points from the target’s Spellpool to establish a rigenic-coupling. As the Telepath’s skill increases they are able to establish a coupling using less of their own, and even their target’s, Personal Rigen. The table below is a quick reference for how much a Telepath and their target spend per casting of the spell.
Telepathy Level | Personal Rigen (Per Target) | Target’s Rigen Usage |
---|---|---|
Apprentice | 25 | 15 |
Journeyman | 25 | 15 |
Expert | 20 | 15 |
Master | 20 | 10 |
100 | 15 | 10 |
Risks
Telepathy is a low risk spell. The greatest danger is the Caster depleting their own rigen to the point that they either fall unconscious or even die. Though disorientation is a common occurrence when a Telepath begins receiving input from multiple sources.
