Avakaron Housing
Housing in Avakaron, especially for outsiders, is limited. Because of the extremely close family culture in Avakaron the vast majority of citizens live in the family longhouse, a huge building with numerous rooms that hosts both immediate and extended family. In most cases the entirety of living members of the family live within a single longhouse, only moving when they marry out. In some cases, mostly with the few original family names of Avakaron, the family is so big there are multiple longhouses that hold the family members. For outsiders, though, there are a few options.
Family Longhouses
Family members all hold the same surname. Both males and females when they marry are allowed to choose their partner’s name or retain their own – though one of the couple must choose their partner’s name, the gender of the choosing partner simply does not matter. The couple then moves into their own room in the family longhouse of their new last name. Once they have children they will be given a second room, with two children allowed per room. A third and fourth child would warrant a third room, and this continues. Once older family members die, their rooms are vacated and given to newly married couples and children. Elder members of the family whose spouses have passed are often moved in with another single elder of the family. The overall goal is to always have two people to a room within the house. Check out the Avakaron Families Lore Article for info on the existing Hellbend families.
Outsider Housing
Ministry Dorms
For outsiders who travel to Avakaron and do not have family residing in the city, there are a few limited options. The first option is for those who come to the city for the Ministry of Casters. Those who wish to learn teh ways of Rigen, and learn how to cast Spells often come to Avakaron to learn from the Ministry. Along with keeping a large record of known Casters and their abilities, the Ministry helps train students in Rigeonology and Spells. Because of this willingness to teach, the Ministry has attracted large amounts of students, especially from outside the city. From small village Hellbend folk to Humans all the way from the capital, Lysium.
The Ministry, then, has dorms available for rent for these students. The dorms, simply called Ministry Dorms, are located directly near the rest of the Ministry campus near the center of Avakaron. The Location Lore Page for Ministry dorms is located here.
The Taheriva Hostel
A once prominent family name in Avkaron, the Taheriva household, has dwindled greatly over the years. The once large family, and its accompanying large longhouse, is practicaly empty with only a few rooms occupied by members, and only a few branches of the family tree still conmtinuing the legacy.
Because of this the family elders, mainly the three oldest, Aikorkem, Dastan, and Rasul, decided to rent out the empty rooms of their longhouse to needy visitors. Their prices are pretty cheap, compared to inns and apartments of other cities, though is also because of the fact that each resident shares the room with one other person. Read more about the Hostel here.
Other Housing
Other than the three options listed above, there really are no other housing options available in Avakaron. If one can find a friend or distant family member whose longhouse has a spare room, and whose elders can approve of the renting of it, then they may be able to stay there at a specified price. This is highly unlikely, though, as most families do not permit non family members to reside inside their longhouses.
