Auristics
Auristics is the ability to read the Rigen energy, or aura, surrounding a living being. This skill is used simply to gain information about a living being’s Rigen abilities. Every living being, be it a humanoid, animal, or plant, has an aura. Rigen aruas will differ widely among species and individuals. There are three main groups of information that can be gained from reading an Aura. The first is the group type of Rigen, be it creative, harnessed, or personal. While the second is the ability to watch as a spell is casted. Finally, and this skill is limited to only higher level proficiency, an Aurour can learn the ability to cloak his own Aura and dim it, greaten it or even hide it completely from another Aurour. An added perk given from the information received from an aura is the ability to identify specific individuals simply from their aura. Overall this is a relatively safe spell that has little or no cost to the caster depending on skill level.
Apperance
An aura’s shape, size, and color will differ widely across race, species and skill levels. An aura’s shape will naturally resemble that of the owner’s silhouette, looking as if it is an extension of the subject’s edges. An aura’s size is determined by their denomination as well as being affected, mainly in humanoids, by the amount of Rigen a subject may possess. A subject will contain a certain amount of Rigen at birth that grows slightly until adulthood and this usually does not change again unless unnaturally affected by spells or Rigen disruptions. Humanoids seem to have the largest auras out of all living beings. Note that exceptions may occur. While plants are regarded with the smallest auras with animals in between. Typically an auras color is determined by the skill the subject has in wielding Rigen. Each Rigen group has its own aura color group, for example Harnessed Rigen is displayed as hotter colors such as red, yellow and orange. Personal Rigen is shown as cooler colors like blue, purple, and green. While Creative Rigen is presented as bland colors like grey, brown, white and black. As a skill in a certain Rigen group grows the color of the aura will grow darker or more vibrant. An aura can contain multiple colors if the subject has experience in multiple spells. If a subject does not practice any Rigen abilities then their aura would simply be clear. Note that Divinaris Blessings cannot be seen through Auristics.
Humaniods
A humanoid’s aura changes based on the race of the subject. Humans have the smallest natural aura because their descendants are least affected by the Rigen that spilled into Siliren during The Change Days. Hellbends on the other hand have the largest natural auras because their very existence was due to Rigen mutations.
Fauna
Standard Fauna have relatively similar sized, smaller auras. Most animals do not contain much Rigen or the ability to wield it. However many Unique Fauna have a larger aura since they contain more Rigen from their ancestors having been directly mutated.
Flora
Plants follow the same rules as animals in the size of their auras. Standard Flora contains a relatively small amount of Rigen and therefore displays a smaller aura. Many Unique Flora contains more Rigen due to mutation and hence presents a slightly larger aura.
Abilities
Preferred Rigen
The first skill in an Aurour’s arsenal is being able to tell what kinds of Rigen a subject is most skilled at and how talented they may be. A higher level Aurour will be able to gather more specific details about a subject than a beginner. This talent focuses mainly on the color of an aura. As explained above, an aura’s color gives hints to the type of Rigen group the subject uses most. An individual such as a standard plant, who has zero skill in wielding Rigen, will always have an aura but it will be very small, and clear rather than contain a color, kind of shimmering like a road on a hot day. Although each group of controlled Rigen has specific colors assigned to it, and therefore an aurour will be able to tell which type of controlled Rigen a caster may use most, at higher levels the Aurour will learn to differentiate between the mix of colors to learn specific spells the subject is more skilled in. Some casters may be talented in more than one type of controlled Rigen, in this case the different colors may be mixed, however the dominating color will correlate with the type of Rigen the subject is most skilled in.
Casting Predictions
Not only can an Aurour gather specific spell information from the colors of an aura, but they can also watch as spells are casted by a subject. Spells are simply the manipulation of Rigen from within or around a caster. Because an aura is basically the Rigen within a person, as a caster draws upon Rigen within themselves for Harnessed spells, intakes Rigen from the surrounding atmosphere, or manipulates the Rigen of another person, drawing it into themselves, the subjects aura will always move or change. At the lowest levels an Aurour can tell when a spell is being casted when he observes the manipulation of Rigen within the aura. At higher levels the Aurour may be able to determine what kind of spell is being casted by watching the subjects aura change colors. A highly skilled Aurour, however, can not only tell when a spell is being cast and what kind of spell, but also the time it will take the Aurour to cast the spell and where, if the type of spell works this way, it may land or what it may affect and how. Note than an Aurour can only know what kind of spell is being cast if they are knowledgeable about that kind of spell.
Cloaking
A final skill an Aurour can learn is the ability to cloak or change his own aura. This skill is only available to high level Expert or Master Aurours because it requires great knowledge on not only different auras in general but extensive knowledge and familiarity with his own aura and Rigen ability. With this cloaking ability the Aurour can dim his aura to make him look less skilled than he may be, or even greaten his aura to look more threatening to other Aurours. They can manipulate the color of their auras as well to make other Aurours think they have different skills than they may actually have. Note that manipulating one’s aura does not change their skills in any way, it simply creates a facade. However the greatest power in this ability is hiding the aura completely. This means that the size of the aura will shrink to a minimum as well as become clear. This portrays that the Aurour has no special ability or skill with Rigen at all. If one decides to cast a spell while cloaked, another Aurour will see no change in the aura at all. The downside to this ability is that it requires a lot of energy and focus. An Aurour will not easily be able to keep up the cloak for long durations. It requires less energy to change his aura, say to another color, than it is to hide it completely.
Identification
An added perk of seeing auras is the ability to identify individuals by their aura, as one would do by a face or birthmark. Everyone has a unique aura, even if they have no skill in Rigen at all and their aura is clear and uninteresting. Some auras may take more time and effort to remember and distinguish from others, but with practice certain details of an aura will be apparent and the Aurour can use these to identify the subject at a later date. For example if an Aurour catches someone spying and gets a glimpse of their aura, but not their face in the shadows before they flee, the Aurour may be able to pick out the spy later on in his travels if he remembers enough about the spy’s aura. The same goes with animals. For most untrained humanoids an entire species of animal, like a wolf, is hard to tell apart individually. For an Aurour, with enough practice, they may begin to notice the differences in a pack’s auras and therefore distinguish one male wolf from another who looks physically similar.
Magical Items
Aurours have the ability to see the aura of a magically enchanted item. Magical items will sport the color associated with Creative Rigen. Their size may differ, larger or smaller that can determine their creation quality or power of magic embedded in them. High-level Casters may be able to determine more specific details about the item’s abilities, but at the very most the information will be vague.
Previous Experience
Like all other spells, Auristics has a prerequisite of at least 5 skill points in Rigenology before having even 1 point in the spell. Auristics is a sight spell and therefore the caster must have the sense of sight in order to gain information from the spell. Blind casters can cast the spell, but they will not be able to see the results.
With Auristics, knowledge of the different spell groups and the different spells within them is extremely important. While an Aurour may be able to cast the spell and see the auras, they will not be able to distinguish their meaning without knowledge of other spells. Because of this it is recommended to be continually learning about other spells and increasing the Rigenology skill, as is recommended for all Casters.
Initial Learning
To begin the process of learning the Auristics spell a potential Caster must first have the knowledge of the existence of the spell. One does not simply stumble upon it. It also helps in learning and decoding if the trainee has experience in other spells or has general understanding of how Rigen works. This general knowledge can be learned from a more experienced Caster, or from books. The spell itself however can be learned from any Aurour of Expert or higher skill.
Skill Levels
Apprentice
An apprentice Aurour begins learning the nuances of different auras, from colors to sizes and other appearance factors. Their teacher will teach them the differences between these factors and the young Caster will mainly work on memorizing and being able to spot and distinguish them in different auras on their own. Much of the time during this stage the Apprentice will be using Auristics a lot, to gather as much information and learning as possible from those around them. Apprentice Aurours do not have any skill in casting predictions, or cloaking, but can start to identify one or two people close to them via their aura with a lot of practice at higher levels of the stage. Apprentice’s can distinguish items with magical properties, but not gain any detailed information on its abilities. A single casting of Auristics can last between fifteen minutes and half an hour.
Journeyman
A journeyman Aurour at this point has memorized the different appearance factors of auras, and mainly focuses on identification and casting predictions. Journeymen Casters should be learning as much as they can about other spells and groups in order to be able to gather as much information from a single aura as possible. Journeymen still have no experience or skill in cloaking. Journeymen, with practice, can learn to identify most family members or friends simply from their aura. Casters at this level can hold their casts for longer periods of time without failing or tiring, and cast more often. Journeymen can distinguish items with magical properties, but not gain any detailed information on its abilities. A single casting of Auristics can last for an hour or two.
Expert
Expert Aurours can hold their casts for most of the day, if they so wish. Concentration to keep the spell going takes much less energy than at lower levels. Appearance is mastered at this point, and Identification via auras can start including acquaintances and others whose aura have been seen more than once.Experts can begin to learn a bit of cloaking, such as dimming their aura slightly, or altering the size in non-drastic ways. Changing the color of the aura is still out of their reach. Experts can distinguish items with magical properties, but not gain any detailed information on its abilities.
Master
Master Aurours have mastered the lower skills of Appearance and Prediction. Masters are very adept at recognizing people and animals based on only their aura, even after only one previous sighting of it. Masters can begin to master their cloaking ability throughout this stage. Lower levels of the stage can dim and strengthen their aura and alter the size. As they grow in skill they can drastically change the overall size. Masters at lower levels learn to change the color of their aura, and at higher levels completely cloak it. Masters can begin to gather vague details about magical items, their quality and abilities, but this information will never be very specific or detailed.
Costs
The Base Spell Cost for Auristics is 16 points from a Caster’s spellpool. Because Auristics has various abilities, below is a table illustrating the costs to perform each ability based on the Caster’s skill level with Auristics.
Spell Ability | Apprentice | Journeyman | Expert | Master | 100 |
