Sundial

Published by admin on

The Sundial was the primary means of tracking time throughout the day in the early aftermath of The Change Days. Developed one way or another in most societies, the Sundial can be found commonly in outside areas. The most famous Sundial in Winhem, and likely the largest, is located in the courtyard of the Government Circle of Lysium

While Sundials are largely used throughout Siliren, they are not the most reliable Timekeeping device that exists. Sundials only work during days where the sun light is unhindered in it’s travel to the surface of Siliren, making cloudy days impossible to track with this device – and nights completely useless for the Sundial. The larger the Sundials radius, the more accurate it can be. These devices are mostly found as permanent structures outside of homes, in town and city centers, or within parks or other large outdoor recreational areas.

There do exist ‘pocket’ Sundials, which are tiny devices that are portable in pockets or bags. They can be fragile, depending on their material, but work nonetheless. Users can pull out these pocket Sundials and tell the time of day as long as they are in direct sunlight and are angling the dial correctly. Because of their small size the accuracy of them is unreliable. At best they can determine what hour of the day it is at the current moment, but fail to accurately determine the minute, and most with basic knowledge can gather this information just by looking at the Sun’s position in the sky.

The Sundial is never perfectly accurate. While more expensive dials may have etchings that determine the hours, minutes, and even seconds of the day, these are never to be taken with full confidence. The Sun is simply too far away and it’s light travelled too far a distance to be accurately measured with tiny ticks.
