Cannon
A Cannon, in Siliren, is the most powerful distance weapon that currently exists. The cannon uses Black Powder both within the Cannon itself in order to ignite and launch the loaded projectile, as well as in some types of Cannonballs.
The Cannon was invented by Vid Bregar, a Human within the Lysium Military, in the year 48 AC. Before this time, other, smaller and less deadly, projectile weapons using Black Powder were invented, but upon the creation of the first successful Cannon, the other weapons were discontinued in most areas.
The knowledge, while initially kept within the Lysium Military, was soon spread throughout the Human population – although its actual use was still very much restricted to Military operations. Even now, it is considered illegal for a civilian, or organization that isn’t working with the Military, to manufacture cannons.
After the discovery of the Hellbend race the Humans were, at first, not too keen on sharing such knowledge with the strange new creatures. Pirates, at this time were following both Hellbend and Human trade vessels in the Gordan Strait. It was at this time when the Humans realized the Hellbends needed a better defense for their ships, and that Humans were suffering from the loss of product. Thus, the Military began selling cannons to Hellbend ships.
While Cannons can, technically, be made from any type of material that can survive a blast of Black Powder and heavy Cannonball, most often they are made from cast iron. This makes them heavy and difficult to transport. Cannons can also made out of bronze which is much lighter, and has visual signs of when the cannon may explode, unlike their iron counterparts. The largest known cannons fire a 42 pound cannonball, and the smallest fire 3 pound cannonball.
Today Cannons are well-known, although their distribution is carefully controlled by the Lysium Military. Ships that are associated with Organized Sailing are allowed to purchase a maximum of six cannons for one ship. Independent ship owners are only permitted to purchase a maximum of four cannons per ship. While any blacksmith could create a cannonball, the Lysium Military is the only known source of blackpowder, and carefully monitors all requests for purchase.
Cannons can be used on land and Lysium Military Garrisons have been known to have a few at some locations, and there are Cannons that are set up on the tops of the Lysium Outer Banks wall for defensive purposes.
