Shikari

Published by Abraxas on

An organization of hunters that spreads across the whole of the Eastern Steppes. These hunters can be hired to guide people to remote locations in the wilderness, or to escort them from one settlement to another. Shikari outposts are where hunters, both members of the Shikari and freelancers, can sell hides and other parts of animal carcasses. Shikari also double as bandit hunters.

History

As time passed, more Hellbend settlements were established beyond the edges of Avakaron’s protection. Caravans and travellers moving in large groups could usually move across the Eastern Steppes without being bothered by wild predators. But as more bandit clans began forming, and laying claim to certain territories, the more dangerous the roads became. With the extensive lands that required protection, Avakaron had neither the personnel nor the resources to secure the roads. But what the Champion Sect did was fund, and inspire, the creation of a group that could make the roads across the Eastern Steppes safer.

The Sect began offering contracts to hunters, to provide protection to travellers across long distances. Guiding them through safer areas of travel in order to reach their destinations. In addition, the Sect established a bounty for all bandits; offering additional pay for every bandit that a hunter proved they killed. A surge of hunters answered the call, and were able to establish some safety to the major roads leading to and from Avakaron. As the bandits became more cautious, the more difficult it became for hunters to earn enough income by providing this protection.

A hunter by the name of Tahsin Safiye spoke to several other hunters that were still interested in doing the work, despite the challenge of receiving pay. They established a guild of hunters that they named The Shikari. In addition to protecting the roads, they were able to become a union for game hunting, able to pay hunters for the meats, skins, and other pieces of game, which they would then sell to individuals and businesses interested in such items. Making them a place where freelance hunters could easily sell goods, but without receiving as good of a price as official Shikari hunters. A Shikari Outpost is located at every city, village, and settlement across the Eastern Steppes.

Shikari Ranks

Sulnagzi

As the head of the organization, the Sulnagzi speaks directly to the Champion Sect or other equivalent bodies of office. On occasion, they travel to each outpost to inspect operations and listen to any reports that require their attention. When venturing into the wilderness, it is usually to help guide some of the highest ranking members of other organizations.

Garalas

When reaching this rank, the character exerts a lot of authority over the Shikari, answering only to the Sulnagzi. A Garalas co-runs an outpost, sells items on behalf of the Shikari to other businesses, individuals, or governments, and collects bounties from the organizations that posted them. They also no longer have to pay a tax on anything they sell to the Shikari, or on any bounty that they collect. Garalas spend less time in the wilderness and usually only go to collect on high value contracts or bounties. Which usually means they are gone for months at a time.

Avonthas

With the new rank, the character only has to pay a 5% tax on everything they sell to the Shikari, and any bounty they collect on. The Avonthas is the guide for longer travels or through more dangerous territories.

Filanga

As the entry level rank, Filanga gain basic membership benefits for being part of the Shikari. They only have to pay a 10% tax, instead of 20%, on everything they sell to the Shikari, or on any bounties they collect on. A Filanga provides guidance and protection to caravans and travelers across shorter distances.

Initiation

To become a member of the Shikari, a character must approach one of their locations to be able to apply. If the character appears tough enough to survive in the wild, they then become an apprentice to an Avonthas Hunter for a season, receiving half the pay of a Filanga. After the season is over, the Avonthas will provide their report on whether the character should be allowed to join or not.
