Skerricks

Skerricks are the main currency of the Hellbend city of Avakaron. First created in Year 41, Skerricks were used as small tokens to show something owed by one family to another. Each of the few families that resided in the not yet named city had glass tokens, formed by the sand pf the nearby shore, imported with their house sigil on it. Families that wished good from another would take the good and give a number of tokens to the other family. These tokens served as a sort of I owe you, and when the family needed goods from the other, they would return a number of tokens equal to the worth of the goods. 

Eventually, as Avakaron grew, the design of the Skerricks were changed to represent the city itself, rather than each family. The Champions Sect of the Avakaron government overtook the commission of the creation of the glass coins and the duty of injecting them into the cities economy. 

Avakaron, while large in itself, is smaller than the human cities and the Hellbend people are not as spread out across Winhem as Humans are. Therefore Skerricks are not massively created and instead commissioned when needed. A small glassblowing shop, manned by Aoureg Idris down near the shore of Avkaron is the singular supplier of the Skerricks, and he is the only one who knows the exact way to make the coins, this way they cannot easily be counterfeit. 

There are three kinds of Skerricks that exist, each named after a different precious metal. The cheapest of the three, equal to the value of a Copper Bit of the Human currency of Rounds, is called the Emerald Skerrick. The middle-value coin, equal to a Silver Cut is named the Topaz Skerrick, and the highest value coin, equal to a Gold Pieces is the Ruby Skerrick. 

The current design of the Skerricks are not too different than the original make. They are small, clear, thick glass circles, only a couple of centimeters wide, with the shape of the Avakaron sigil pressed into them on one side. Depending on their worth, they have a different piece of the Unique Uathirtch tree from the northern White Wood Forest. The Emerald Skerrick has part of or up to a whole leaf of the tree, which are a bright green color, captured in the glass. The Topaz Skerrick has a small piece of bark, a golden brown color, from the tree and the Ruby Skerrick has a bit of a petal from the Uathirtch flower, a beautiful pink-red, within it.

Skerricks are the main currency of the city of Avakaron, as well as the currency of the outlying Hellbend settlements in Winhem. Some Skerricks are present in Lysium and other Human cities but are rarely accepted, usually from one Hellbend to another.
