Thread Types

Published by admin on

When Roleplaying on Siliren there are a few different IC thread types, each having their own rules and regulations. Threads are defined as a post with a  response that follows the same theme or storyline. All threads listed below are considered IC threads, and therefore must be posted in the POV of the PC, not the Player.
Threads are used to create and continue PC storylines, gain skills, and build relationships with other PCs. Some thread types can be graded to further the skills, inventory, and coin of the PC. See the Grading Guide to understand more about how grading works. All threads required a Timestamp, unless otherwise noted.

This guide also touches on the different Thread Tags that exist on Siliren, what they mean and how to use them. Thread Tags are an easy way to let other players know the status of someone’s thread.

Solo

A Solo thread is a thread in which a PC tells a story from their POV without any interaction with other PCs. NPCs, monsters and other non player beings can be used and controlled within Solo threads, as long as the PC is allowed to use them normally. These threads can host a variety of themes, such as training threads, job threads, or storyline plots. Solo threads can be done within the current season, or can take place in the past within Memories, which will be explained below. This kind of thread can be submitted to be graded to receive skill points, coins, and items, if applicable.

Multiplayer

A Multiplayer thread means that multiple PCs write and interact within the thread. There are no limits to how many PCs can be within one thread, as long as there are two PCs it is considered Multiplayer. However, it is advised to not make the group of PCs too large, as things get out of hand, or take too long to complete. Multiplayer threads can be graded.

Although, within a Solo thread the player writing can control every aspect of the thread, within a Multiplayer thread this is not the case. The PC cannot control another PC or any items or NPCs/Pets owned by a different PC. This is considered Godmodding and it is not allowed. The only exception to this is if a player has received permission from another PC to control that PC and/or the owned NPCs or Pets. In these cases it is advised to plan the control thoroughly with the partner PC as to not overstep any bounds. The other PC can reject the plan at any time, even after posting, in which case the writer PC needs to change the text.

Memory

A Memory thread is a thread that takes place in the past. Threads that are set in any season that is not the current season are Memory Threads. Memory threads can be Solo threads or Multiplayer threads, as long as the partner PCs are following the same restrictions as above for their PC.

These threads are unique because if a PC buys food or items that are temporary, the PC does not have to add the items to their inventory, or subtract the cost from their ledger. PCs are allowed to use items in Memory threads that are not in their inventory, but the item cannot be used in any non-Memory thread.

These threads can also be submitted to be graded for skill points, coins, reputation, and items, if applicable. Memory Threads that take place before character creation can only receive skill points and reputation in their grade.

Job

Job threads are threads that take place in the current season where the PC works at their job or career directly. The PCs job is chosen by the Player and approved by the local Spirit. Read more about how Jobs work. Within Job threads, a PC roleplays working at their job.. Job threads can be Solo or Multiplayer as long as the PCs job is the main focus of the thread. These threads can be submitted for skill points and items, if applicable, but coins that represent wage will be awarded for the whole season later on. Job threads can be Memories, but cannot provide any benefit to the PC in the current season. A PC does not have to write any Job threads if they do not want, being rewarded a salary is automatic every season. For low level jobs, Job threads are NOT required. But higher skilled jobs do have certain seasonal writing requirements in order to earn their wage.

Dreamwalking

A Dreamwalking thread is a story that takes place in a dream, either when the PC is sleeping, or otherwise unconscious. Dreamwalking threads allow the writer a lot of freedom, as the world can be manipulated in any manner, or can take place in another world entirely. Basically, within these types of threads, anything goes. PCs can RP outside their skill level successfully, they can own items or coins they do not own when awake, or can speak languages they do not know, or that do not exist. These threads can be Solo or Multiplayer and in Dreamwalking threads, PCs who are not in the same location, or have never met, can RP together. Dreamwalking threads have their own forum called Dreamwalking, where they should be posted. These threads, however, cannot be submitted for a grade to gain skill points, coins, or items. PCs can learn some limited information, such as basic facts about the partner PC. But skill related information cannot be gained. For example, if a PC tells a partner PC about a plant commonly known to them, but not to the other PC, the information would be forgotten when they awoke. If you are confused about what information can be gained from a thread already written, ask a Spirit Moderator to read the thread and clarify what info the PCs would awake with, and what info would be forgotten. In very rare cases a Spirit Moderator may allow a Dreamwalking thread to be graded. However, these cases would be thoroughly discussed with the Spirit, most likely before the thread actually is written.

Prayer

A Prayer thread is usually a very short thread, maybe one or two posts, but can always be longer, where the PC prays to a God or Goddess. The Prayer can be in any location available to them and at any time within the current season. But the thread itself would be located within the Prayer forum. Normal prayers can be within any other kind of thread, but if they are not within the Prayer Forum, they are not considered ‘Prayer threads’. Prayer threads are almost exclusively the dialogue of the prayer itself but can contain some action or location description, however, the main focus is the prayer dialogue. Prayer threads are Solos only and cannot be submitted to be graded for skill points, coins, or items. These threads can, however, help prove the PC’s devotion to a certain God or Goddess. Please note that every Prayer a PC preforms does not need to be posted in this forum. The purpose of this forum besides organization purposes is to document the dedication of a PC to a certain God or Goddess.

Modded

Modded threads are very special threads can can take place within the current season or within Memories. Modded threads do not take place in Dreamwalking threads or Prayer threads. What defines this type of thread is that a Spirit Moderator is posting within the thread along with the PC(s) to create a specific plotline. Modded threads can be Solo – where the only other poster is a Moderator – or Multiplayer. Spirit Moderators do not count as a partner PC, but the PC cannot control any NPC, monster or other non player being that the Moderator is also controlling, without specific permission. Modded threads often help to further the city plotline and/or the PCs personal plotline. These threads can be submitted to be graded for skill points, coin, or items, if applicable, but can only be graded by the Spirit Moderator who modded the thread, or by a Spirit Moderator who holds a higher position than the original moderator.

Thread Tags

Thread Tags are words or phrases that are posted in parenthesis () or brackets [] in the title of a thread. Whoever creates the threads original post is the one who chooses and posts the thread tags. Thread tags are not required elements of a thread, but they are extremely useful. Also note that the above thread types are often used as additional tags as well. More than one tag is allowed to be included in a thread title, as long as they don’t contradict each other. Thread tags can change at any time. The first post simply needs to be edited o change the title and therefore the tag. If you start a thread as Open, you can always change it to Closed later. If a thread does not have a tag, consider it Closed.

Open

An [Open] thread is a thread that the creator is allowing any and all other players in the area to join without asking at any time. This is popular with newer players who do not know where to start, and simple meet and greet threads with no real planned storyline. Be cautious with this tag, because it means any number of characters can join at any time. If a few people join your open thread and you decide that is enough people, you can always go back and change the tag to [Closed] or something else that fits better now.

If your thread is labeled as Open this means you are willing to accept anyone. So please be courteous and accept anyone that joins. Also be aware that some threads may not have tags on them.

Closed

A [Closed] thread is one that is not open to any characters joining. Usually, this is a planned thread for a couple of characters and they do not want other random players joining in and messing up their plan. A Closed thread almost always has more than one existing member, or else it would be a [Solo] thread. A Closed tag is also used to signify a finished thread that is waiting to be graded.

Solo

A [Solo] thread is nearly identical to a Closed thread. This means the thread is not open to new players, the only difference is that a Solo thread only has one character posting in it. These are common for storyline or skill, threads.

PM to Join

A [PM to Join] thread is one where the creator of the thread is willing to have others join it, but not just anyone. These threads are usually semi-planned but need more than one person to execute them. The creator of the thread may simply want to know who is joining beforehand, is or looking for a specific type of character, or willingness of a character. Therefore in order to join this thread you must PM the creator and ask. The creator then may simply accept or deny, or may have some questions for you to answer before they make a decision.
