Nidraudai

Published by Abraxas on

A secret society with its roots founded in Avakaron that is comprised of Hellbend casters. All members seek to discover the full potential of rigen and its ability to influence the world of Siliren. Their membership includes Hellbends from most niches of Hellbend society. And while they possess the ability to influence any social, economic, academic, or political circumstance, the Nidraudai will only take such action after extensive consideration.

History

During the times when the Ministry of Casters was still known as The Guild, the most prominent officials promoted the study of every known spell. As dangerous, disrespectful, and intrusive spells were learned by many casters within Avakaron, there was a surge of misuse that the Champion Sect felt they needed to control. In the year 126 A.C., the Champion Sect outlawed the practice of several spells within its borders, while also appointing several casters to reform the structure of The Guild into what is now known as The Ministry of Casters. While this made it more difficult for some people to learn spells, it helped drastically in reducing the number of incidents of someone being victim to another’s magic.

But there were those who did not agree with the new mandates. A group of Hellbend intellectuals got together and agreed to continue the research of rigen without slowing down for social moralities. This group called themselves the Nidraudai, as they sought to eventually learn everything about magic. They keep their practice of forbidden magic secret, even from their own families. As they grew older, they sought members of the new generations that were like minded that they could trust to continue their accomplishments. In the year 276 A.C., the Ministry of Casters had grown to suspect a group of individuals that were promoting the study of forbidden magic, and began an inquisition.

Many in the group saw the eventual annihilation of their order, and devised a plan to ensure their survival. On the 26th of Summer, 278 A.C. a ship leaving Avakaron was destroyed by the Ministry of Casters. Many of the Nidraudai died aboard the ship, and the remaining survivors had managed to escape the Ministry’s notice. Since that time, the Ministry has believed the order, whose name they never learned, to have been destroyed.

Hierarchy

There are only two tiers of membership within The Nidraudai. The first are the full-fledged members, referred to as Mavens, that receive the Nidraudai’s ruby signet ring. The second are inductees that have yet to demonstrate either their magical skill, magical knowledge, or ability to fulfill the Nidraudai’s agendas. Mavens refer to the inductees as Novices, who receive a silver signet ring. It operates as a Geniocracy, to which only the Mavens are able to converse about what actions the organization will take. And all Mavens are of equal rank with no elected ruler or overseer, though some may have garnered more respect than others.

A Novice is the direct subordinate, and student, to a single Maven. The Maven is held accountable for everything that the novice does and can be punished severely for the actions of their novice. No Maven is ever to have more than one novice at a time. Efforts are made to keep novices from learning the identities of other Mavens. While novices are not forbidden from socializing with each other, on the off-chance that they have identified each other, they are forbidden from revealing the identities of their Mavens. Meanwhile, all Mavens know the identities of all Novices.

The Signet Ring

The band of the ring is made of either silver or ruby, depending on the member’s rank, and has a flat circular top. A medium sized jade stone has been embedded into the band and has an eye with a three-point star for an iris carved into it. On the inside of the band will be the novice’s or Maven’s initials. While unique in design, the signet rings are often mistaken as a sign of being a dedicated worshipper of Nilata, who’s symbol includes the three-point star iris. Members are provided their ring and must immediately report if it is stolen, although the responsibility of recovering their ring lies with the wearer.

Market Values for each silver signet ring is approximately 21 Ruby. The ruby signet ring’s market value is approximately 31 Ruby.

Any member of the Nidraudai that is excommunicated from the group has their signet ring stripped away.

Services

Mavens teach their novice at least one, or possibly all, of the spells that they know. Usually, the spell that has been outlawed. A novice receives training, usually both magical and non-magical, from their Maven. In exchange, the novice must perform any task their Maven gives them, and the Maven has no obligation to explain the purpose of the task they bestow. The task sometimes is given by their Maven but actually serves the purposes of a different Maven.

Many Mavens hold key positions in the city, and sometimes must perform a service for another Maven. One Maven can teach a spell to another, but it is expected for such favors to be called upon for repayment in the future.

OOC Note: Learning a spell from another Maven as an novice requires either a Quest, or a considerate expenditure of Reputation. Secrecy is paramount within the Nidraudai, and a Maven revealing themselves to another Maven’s novice is an extremely risky act.

Relations

It is possible that the Nidraudai has connections to almost any organization. However, no other organization has any knowledge about the Nidraudai’s existence. If anyone were to become aware, there are Maven’s talented enough in Telepathy to remove that knowledge.

Initiation

A person is not considered for a novice until they have obtained a Reputation level of Friendly with the Nidraudai. They must demonstrate a keen interest in magic and the possibilities it can perform. The recruiter, most often a Maven, takes time to subtly discover if the potential recruit is dedicated enough to ignore moral boundaries in the pursuit of knowledge. Mavens seek other intellectuals and do not have the patience to instruct their novice on things they consider to be more “basic” knowledge. Characters become the novice of the Maven that recruited them, and a Maven can only have one novice.
